Nuevo Sol SF — Here For You Since 1989
Nuevo Sol SF is San Francisco’s original and longest-standing worker center — and one of the oldest in the country. For over 35 years, we have stood with day laborers and domestic workers in the Mission District: recovering stolen wages, defending labor rights, training leaders, and building collective power from the ground up.
Our History
In 1989, immigrant leaders José Samperio and José Echeverría founded the San Francisco Day Laborer Program in the Mission District — organizing workers on street corners at a time when day laborers had no protections, no recourse, and no home base.
In 1991, after securing public funding from the City of San Francisco, the program launched its first operations out of a trailer at Franklyn Square Park.
In 2000, Renee Saucedo and Guillermina Castellanos founded La Colectiva de Mujeres within the program — centering the power of women domestic workers and expanding the organization’s reach into the homes where so much invisible labor takes place.
In 2023, members fought for and won full independence. Nuevo Sol SF was born — a new name for a movement that never stopped growing.
Who We Are Today
Our membership is 98% Latinx immigrant workers — primarily women in the domestic sector and day laborers who are essential to this region’s economy, yet remain among the most vulnerable to wage theft, job instability, and lack of protection.
What makes us different: no commission is ever taken from a job placement. Every dollar goes to the worker. Members lead our outreach, policy, and advocacy committees. We connect neighbors who need support in their homes and businesses with skilled workers who provide quality services for fair pay. This is economic justice — neighbors supporting neighbors, fomenting the local economy from the ground up.
We are guided by three pillars of power: political, economic, and social. And by three words that have defined this movement since the beginning:
